Jongny

Jongny is a municipality in the district of Riviera -Pays- d'Enhaut the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Jongny is located on 639 m above sea level. M., 2 km north of the district main town Vevey ( straight line ). The village extends on both sides of the little valley of the Ruisseau de Bergère, on the steep southeastern slope of Mont Pelerin, a scenic location about 260 m above the lake level of Lake Geneva and high above Vevey.

The area of ​​2.2 km ² large municipality area includes a section near the northeastern shore of Lake Geneva. The communal land extends from the steep slope on the right (north) side of the valley of the Veveyse north on the broad saddle between the Mont Pelerin in the west and Mont Vuarat in the east. Population

With 1466 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Jongny belongs to the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Vaud. Of the 83.8% inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 9.1 % and 2.3 % in English (as of 2000). The population of Jongny amounted in 1850 to 279 residents in 1900 to 308 inhabitants. Since 1960 (386 inhabitants), the population has increased significantly, associated with a quadrupling of the population within 40 years. The settlement area of Jongny has grown together seamlessly with that of Chardonne.

Economy

Jongny was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Today, the crop and livestock farming have only a minor role in the occupational structure of the population. In the lowest part of the municipality is operated on a few hectares of vines.

History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1168 under the name Jaunie. Later, the names Jalnie and Galniei appeared ( in the 12th century), Jongnye ( 1373 ) and Jongnyez ( 1522). The etymology of the place name is unknown.

Jongny is located on the spot where the Roman period met the military roads of Aventicum ( Avenches ) and Lausanne and then along the east bank of Lake Geneva via Octodurum ( Martigny ) to the Great St Bernard led. Since the Middle Ages Jongny was under the Bishop of Lausanne and belonged to the parish Corsier. At times Jongny was a fief of the family of Blonay.

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Lausanne. After the collapse of the ancien régime Jongny belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the district of Vevey. Jongny was part of the large parish Corsier and was only in 1816 with the separation of a politically independent community. End of the 19th century the first hotels were built. Jongny does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish Chardonne.
