Attalens ( Freiburg Patois Atalin? / I ) is a municipality in the district Veveyse (German Vivisbach ) of the canton of Fribourg in Switzerland.

Geography

Except Attalens even the municipality includes the villages Vuarat and Tatroz and the hamlet Corcelles and Rombuet. The area is in a valley that was excavated from the Rhone Glacier between Mount Vuarat and the Mont Pelerin. The waters flowing south to Lake Geneva on the one hand, on the other hand, north to Broye. Neighboring municipalities are Bossonnens, Granges ( Veveyse) and Remaufens in the Canton of Fribourg and Chardonne, Jongny, Corsier -sur -Vevey and Oron in the Vaud.

Population

The population of Attalens has steadily increased to reach a level of more than 2,700 inhabitants. The main language is French and the majority of the population are Roman Catholic.

Government

Every 5 years the population elects a General Council consisting of 30 General Councillors and General Councils ( legislature) and a council consisting of seven city councils and municipal councils (local government ).

Economy

Almost 50 % of the workforce is employed in the service sector. Many new households mainly from the Lausanne region have settled in recent years in Attalens. This in turn has greatly promoted the construction activity and provides the community with new challenges.

History

The discovery of a Roman road and Burgundian graves testify that Attalens has been inhabited since ancient times. Attalens is first mentioned in writing in 1068. In the Middle Ages, the dukes of Savoy and the lords of Oron fought for the possession of Attalens. Finally, it was taken over by House De Challants. This, in debt, sold the property at Freiburg in 1615. Attalens became the bailiwick until 1798.
