Jörg Schmidt
Jörg Schmidt ( born February 16, 1961 in Berlin ) is a former German canoeist, who raced for the GDR.
Jörg Schmidt started his footballing career in 1972 at the BSG Turbine Hall. In 1974 he visited the children 's and youth sports school in Magdeburg, in 1975 he started for the SC Berlin- Grunau. 1984 after his marriage to Birgit Fischer, he moved to forward ASK Potsdam.
Schmidt won in 1977 at Spartakiade in One - Canadians over 1000 meters. In 1979, he was a three time Junior Champion of the GDR. His first league title in the senior category Schmidt won in 1980 over 1000 meters before Eckhard Leue. At the Olympic Games in 1980 Leue went to and won the bronze medal. 1982 Schmidt won both the East German Cup over 500 meters and the 1000 meters. About 1000 meters he defeated this Eckhard Leue and Ulrich Papke, who won the 1981 world title over this distance. Schmidt represented the GDR at the World Championships in Belgrade and won the title over 1000 meters. 1983 Schmidt defended his East German championship titles over 1000 meters. 1984 Schmidt represented the GDR at the competitions of friendship, the replacement competitions for athletes from countries that did not participate in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles because of the Olympic boycott. In competitions of friendship Jörg Schmidt took second place behind the starting of the Soviet Union Ivan Klementjevs Latvians.
1986 took Schmidt in the GDR Cup second place over 500 meters behind Olaf Heukrodt and over 1000 meters behind Ulrich Papke. 1987 won Heukrodt on both distances before Schmidt. Five years after his last league title won Schmidt in 1988 again over 1000 meters. At the 1988 Olympic Games Jörg Schmidt received the silver medal behind Ivan's Klementjevs. He was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver for this success. He received this medal also in 1984.
Jörg Schmidt was a trained electrician and went on with the NVA officer. From 1984 to 1993 Schmidt was married to the canoeist Birgit Fischer, from his marriage had two children.
