Jorge Del Castillo

Jorge Alfonso Alejandro del Castillo Gálvez ( born July 2, 1950 in Lima) is a Peruvian lawyer and politician. He has been a member since 1999 and secretary general of the Peruvian APRA party. From 28 July 2006 to 10 October 2008, he was the Prime Minister of Peru. His successor Yehude Simon was appointed.

Political career

Jorge Del Castillo studied from 1968 to 1974 Law at the National University of San Marcos in Lima. From 1984 to 1986, Del Castillo Mayor of Barranco, a district of Lima. In 1985, he was appointed Prefect of the Province of Lima, and two years later he won the election for mayor of the city. He held the office until 1989.

Del Castillo interrupted his political career and studied from 1993 to 1994 Constitutional Law at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. In 1995 he was elected as a Member of Lima in the Peruvian Congress. Since 1999, Del Castillo Secretary General of the APRA.

After defeating Alan García in the presidential election Del Castillo was appointed in July 2006 as Prime Minister of Peru.

On October 10, 2008 Del Castillo explained along with his cabinet resigned. Background is a corruption scandal, in which the Prime Minister was accused of accepting bribes for issuing production licenses for oil and gas.
