José Alencar

José Alencar Gomes da Silva (born 17 October 1931 in Muriaé, Minas Gerais, † March 29, 2011 in São Paulo) was a Brazilian politician and entrepreneur.

Life

He came from a small business family and was used as the eleventh child according to his own biography early to work. In 1950 he founded his first company, a small shop. More followed over time. He was doing extremely successful and eventually led, together with his son Christiano Coteminas the Group, the largest with more than 15,000 employees textile company in Brazil, with headquarters in the city of Montes Claros in Minas Gerais. His political career began in 1994 with an unsuccessful bid for governor in his home state. In 1998 he was elected to the Brazilian Senate. There he worked on the committees for Economic Affairs and Social Affairs. In the 2002 presidential election, he supported as a member of the conservative Partido Liberal ( PL " Liberal Party "), the more the left is arranged Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT " Workers Party " ), and was by his election victory on 1 January 2003 Vice-President of Brazil. José Alencar died on 29 March 2011 from cancer. The disease was first diagnosed in 1997 with him during his time as Vice President Alencar had been treated several times.
