José Ballivián

José Ballivián ( born May 5, 1805 in La Paz, † October 6, 1852 in Rio de Janeiro) was a general in the Peruvian- Bolivian Bolivian Konföderationskrieg and 9th President of Bolivia from September 27 1841 to December 23, 1847.

José Ballivián was born into a wealthy family, the son of Jorge Ballivián and Isidora Segurola. Already in 1817, he participated in military exercises under the Spanish administrator of the city, Mariano Ricafort, part and left his home town, but returned the following year back under Sánchez Lima.

In November 1841, he defeated the Peruvian General Agustín Gamarra at the Battle of Ingavi and prevented the Peruvian invasion of his homeland. This victory makes him a national hero, so that he has the presidency was offered in the same year. However, not managed to achieve the support of the army, so that he could not form a stable government in the long run. In December 1847, he was expelled by a coup from office and fled in January 1848, inter alia, to Brazil, where he lived until his death in exile.

The Bolivian province in the Beni Department Ballivián wears his honor his name. His son Adolfo Ballivián Coll in 1873, also president of Bolivia.
