José María Cirarda Lachiondo

José María Cirarda Lachiondo (* May 23, 1917 in Baquio, Spain, † September 17, 2008 in Vitoria, Spain) was Archbishop of Pamplona. He was considered an important representative of the transition of Spanish Catholicism after the end of the Franco regime.

Life

José María Cirarda Lachiondo studied at the Pontifical University of Comillas, became a Doctor of Divinity. doctorate and was ordained a priest on July 5, 1942. He was professor of dogmatic theology at the seminary of Vitoria.

In 1960, he was against veto of Francisco Franco, of Pope John XXIII. appointed Titular Bishop of Drusiliana and appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Seville. Pope Paul VI. appointed him in 1968 to the bishop of Santander and from November 1968 to the Apostolic Administrator of Bilbao; 1971 for the Bishop of the Diocese of Córdoba. In 1978 he was appointed Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Pamplona, ​​also with the task of Apostolic Administration of Tudela.

He was 1978-1981 President of the Spanish Episcopal Conference.

His age-related resignation was accepted by Pope John Paul II in 1993.
