José Relvas

José Carlos de Mascarenhas Relvas ( born March 5, 1858 in Golegã, † October 31, 1929 in Alpiarça ) was a Portuguese politician. From 27 January to 30 March 1919 he was prime minister of his country.

José Relvas studied law at the University of Coimbra, left this but without a degree. Since his youth he was a staunch Republican and a member of the Republican Party. On 5 October 1910, he called from the balcony of the town hall in Lisbon, the Portuguese Republic. In the Provisional Government of Teófilo Braga, he served as Minister of Finance. Later, he represented his country as ambassador in Madrid. In 1919 he was for about two months head of government of his country, led one of the many unstable governments of the First Republic. In addition, he still took the post of Minister of Interior. The government of José Relvas went as a "government of Republican concentration " in the story, because in all their various currents of the Republicans ( Democrats, Evolutionists and Unionists ) were represented. Relvas himself was a member of the Democratic Party.
