Josef Jireček

Josef Jirecek ( born October 9, 1825 Vysoke Myto, † November 25, 1888 in Prague) was a Czech literary historian, linguist and politician.

Life

Josef Jirecek came from a poor family. After school in Hohenmauth and the high school in Leitomischl visit he began in 1844 with studies at the Philosophical and since 1849 the Law Faculty of the Charles University in Prague. During his studies, he trained intensively in foreign languages ​​and lived on the extra income of a private teacher. 1848, during the national movement of the Czechs, he took as a member of the Slavic Congress, chaired by František Palacký part.

Jirecek was married to the daughter of Pavel Josef Šafařík. After the death of his father, he began publishing his writings in Slavic. With Leopold Hasner of Artha and later with Karel Jaromír Erben, he edited the newspaper since 1848 Pražské noviny ( Prague newspaper ), the Journal České Muzeum initiated ( Czech Museum ) and was secretary of the association Matice Česká. Since 1849 he translated together with heirs Jan Neubauer and Vendelín Grünwald the Zákonník Občanský ( Civil Code). In 1850 he went from Prague to Vienna and worked as a lawyer at the Ministry of Culture and Education and published besides the Vienna Tageblatt, a magazine that was published by the Bohemian nobility.

In 1851 he was member of a commission, which standardized the scientific nomenclature for Czech middle schools, high schools and junior high schools. The Chairman of the Commission and Minister Leo von Thun- Hohenstein Jirecek commissioned with the creation of a Czech reading book. This reading books and literary anthologies were 1853-1861 distributed in the schools. As secretary he took over in 1859 the management of the secondary schools in the Czech Republic and because of his linguistic skills in other Slavic countries Austria -Hungary, Hungary and Italy.

In 1862 he was one of the supporters of the authenticity of the Koniginhof handwriting. On 12 February 1871, the Austrian Prime Minister Count Karl Sigmund von Hohenwart appointed him Minister of Culture and Education. During the period of his activity in this office, he ordered linguistic equality in the various countries of Austria - Hungary. In Poland, the Academy of Sciences in Krakow was launched at that time. In Dalmatia was opened some Slavic schools in Bohemia and Moravia, the equality of the Czech language was greeted with the German. On October 30, 1871, he had to give back his office.

In 1873 he returned to Prague and only devoted himself to his literary activity. Most of his works deal with the scientific interpretation of Bohemian literature Bohemian literary history and old monuments. From May 5, 187X to 25 November 1888 he was chairman of the Royal Czech Society of Teachers.

In addition to numerous memberships in Czech associations and institutes, he was also a member of the Polish, South Slavic and Hungarian Academy as well as the archaeological team in Moscow and Zagreb. He was also a member of the Consortium for teaching Serbian in Belgrade and the Royal Historical Society in London. In 1884 he was awarded the Order of the Iron Crown of the II class.

His intensive research, the early death of his daughter and the almost fanatical hostility of his German but also Czech colleagues resulted in Jirecek to health problems. During his visit to Vienna on March 1, 1887 he was seized with a nervous disease that also affected his brain activity and after a long period eventually led to his death. He is buried in Prague in the Vyšehrad cemetery.

His son Constantine Jirecek was also a significant historian, his brother Hermenegild Jirecek lawyer.
