Josef Otto Entres

Joseph Otto Entres ( born March 13, 1804 in Fuerth, † May 14, 1870 in Munich) was a German sculptor.

Life

With 16 years Entres came to the Munich Art Academy and became a student of Konrad Eberhard. Especially in his medieval style Entres was very influenced by Eberhard.

With the return to the Middle Ages Entres turned away one of the first of the classicizing direction. For the Munich Cathedral Entres works include a statue of the Madonna and a supper.

Besides his work as a sculptor Entres was also an art dealer and collector of medieval Franconian and Swabian sculptures. In re-gothicised various churches he appeared both as a sculptor as well as a supplier of medieval works from his collection.

Entres renovation and partial reconstruction of Schrenck Altar in St. Peter's Church in Munich in 1841 can be seen as an early example of historic preservation, although it is no longer present historic preservation requirements.

The artist Johann Petz and Joseph Knabl are to be regarded as Entres ' students.
