Joseph-Aurèle Plourde

Joseph- Aurèle Plourde ( born January 12, 1915 in Saint -François -de- Madawaska, New Brunswick, Canada; † 5 January 2013) was Archbishop of Ottawa.

Life

Joseph- Aurèle Plourde studied philosophy and theology at St. Joseph's College in Memramcook, New Brunswick, and at Holy Heart Seminary in Halifax, Nova Scotia. On 7 May 1944 he was awarded by Bishop L. Rosario Brodeur in the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Edmunston, the sacrament of Holy Orders. Plourde was Professor of Social Sciences and Philosophy at the Saint -Louis College in Edmundston.

Pope Paul VI. 1964 appointed him titular bishop of Lapda and auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Alexandria in Ontario Canada. He received his episcopal consecration on 26 August 1964, the then Apostolic Delegate and later Cardinal Sergio Pignedoli; Were co-consecrators Rosario L. Brodeur, Bishop of Alexandria in Ontario, and Joseph- Roméo Gagnon, Bishop of Edmundston. He was a Council Father of the last session of the Second Vatican Council.

1967 he was appointed Archbishop of Ottawa. From 1969 to 1971 he was President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops ( CCCB ). His age-related resignation was accepted in 1989 by Pope John Paul II.

In 1989 he was honored with the Order of Canada. Plourde was a member of the Order of Malta and the Knights of the Holy grave in Jerusalem.
