Joseph Butler

Joseph Butler ( born May 18, 1692 in Wantage, † June 16, 1752 in Bath ) was an English bishop of the Anglican Church in Durham and Bristol, theologian, representatives of apologetics and philosopher. He was best known for his critique of the egoism of Thomas Hobbes. He was also influenced by this as by John Locke and Francis Hutcheson. During his lifetime and beyond, he influenced even other great philosophers such as David Hume, Thomas Reid, and Adam Smith.
