Joseph Calleja
Joseph Calleja ( born January 22, 1978 in Attard, Malta) is a Maltese opera singers (tenor ).
Biography
Joseph Calleja began singing at the age of 16 years. His teacher was the Maltese tenor Paul Asciak. He made his debut in 1997 in Malta as Macduff in Macbeth; in the same year he won the Belvedere Hans Gabor competition, the 1998 Caruso Competition in Milan and 1999 Domingos Operalia competition.
In 2000, he debuted in Toronto as Rodolfo in La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini. In autumn 2009, Calleja sang at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the role of Hoffmann in Offenbach's opera Les contes d' Hoffmann, Rolando Villazón after was canceled due to his vocal crisis. During the 2010/2011 season Calleja took three games at the Metropolitan Opera: Rodolfo in La bohème, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti soprano Natalie Dessay and in addition to the Duke of Mantua in Verdi's Rigoletto.
At his Covent Garden debut in London he sang the Duke of Mantua, and there is also the Alfredo in La traviata and the Macduff in Macbeth, also the Nicias in Jules Massenet Thaïs in a concert performance.
In other concert performances, he took over the role of Tebaldo in Vincenzo Bellini's I Capuleti ei Montecchi at the Konzerthaus in Vienna with Anna Netrebko (soprano) and Elina Garanca (mezzo- soprano), which was recorded by Deutsche Grammophon and released in early 2009.
As a concert singer Calleja Germany has taken several tours with recitals and solo recitals as well as joint performances with the Russian soprano Anna Netrebko. He also joined together opera galas in Leipzig, Hampton Court and the Faenol Festival in the UK with the Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel. In 2012 he designed parts of the Last Night of the Proms.
