Life

Josef Egger 1907 secretary and 1908 bureau chief at the Municipal Theatre of Leoben, where he also took on small roles. He opted for the acting profession and then played among others in Linz. In 1915 he was engaged at the Raimund Theater in Vienna.

Egger took over in the twenties, mostly comic roles in operettas and stepped out at the Raimund Theater in Vienna at various stages on. Early thirties, he appeared at the Deutsches Theater in Munich. At this time he received his first film offer.

He often played on the side of Hans Moser only small supporting roles, such as a bailiff in Schrammeln, an usher in love is duty free, a postman in the Lord Councilor. Characters with a Czech accent were his specialty. In the few leading roles, such as Windisch Gruber in The Councilor violinist or as a frog in Geza von Bolvarys the bat, he could show that he had a lot of character originality, but in the era of Hans Moser was just only room for one original codger. At the end of his career Josef Egger played then a gravedigger in the first Spaghetti Westerns A Fistful of Dollars in 1964 and a quirky old in the sequel For a few dollars more from the following year.

His grave is in the cemetery of Gablitz.

One died young, the second was a well-known classical pianist ( in the radio broadcast to the signing of the State Treaty in 1955, he played live) who later emigrated to Brazil, the youngest, Joseph Egger, born in 1925, followed in the footsteps of his father at first, decided to but after a short engagement at the Stadttheater Baden bei Wien to a career as a representative known companies such as Westinghouse and Suchard. He uses the acquired prosperity to this day selfless support of cultural projects in Spain, Austria and Switzerland.
