Joseph Laniel

Joseph Laniel ( born October 12, 1889 in Vimoutiers, Orne, † April 8, 1975 in Paris) was a French politician (AD, PRL).

Biography

As an industrialist, he was from 1932 to 1940 and from 1945 to 1958 Member of the Calvados département in the National Assembly. His first government post he held in 1940 in the government of Paul Reynaud as undersecretary in the Ministry of Finance.

In July 1940, he agreed to the transfer of extraordinary powers to Marshal Philippe Pétain. However, he later joined the Resistance and was one of the founders of the Conseil National de la Résistance. On 26 August 1944 he participated on the side of Charles de Gaulle and Georges Bidault in the liberation of Paris. He founded in 1945 a party of the moderate right, the Parti de la liberté républicain (PRL ), which later merged with the " Independents ".

Reign

With a tenure of nearly a year, the government of Joseph Laniel was one of the more stable governments of the Fourth Republic.

She was faced with social conflict, the deep division of public opinion on the issue of the European Defence Community (EDC ) and the intensification of the Indochina conflict. The military defeat of Dien Bien Phu led to the overthrow of the government of Joseph Laniel.

During his tenure Laniel entered 1953 in the election for president, who was elected in the Fourth Republic from both chambers of parliament. However, after the 11th ballot he withdrew his candidacy; was selected in the 13th round, René Coty, the Centre national des Independants et the paysans belonged as Laniel.
