Joseph Laurent Philippe

Joseph Laurent Philippe SCI ( born April 3, 1877 in Rollengergronn, Luxembourg today, † October 21, 1956 in Luxembourg ) was from 1935 to 1956 Bishop of Luxembourg.

Life

Joseph Laurent Philippe was ordained a priest on May 28, 1904. On January 20, 1926, he was appointed to the Superior General of the Congregation of the Sacred Heart priests.

On April 25, 1935, he was named by Pope Pius XI. Titular Bishop of Tinum and Coadjutor Bishop in Luxembourg. He received his episcopal consecration Francesco Cardinal Marchetti Selvaggiani on 9 June of the same year in Rome. On September 9, 1935 he became bishop of Luxembourg. During his tenure, the enlargement of the cathedral from 1935 to 1938 and the occupation of Luxembourg in World War II fell through the German Reich. One third of the churches and chapels of the diocese was destroyed by acts of war, in particular from 1944 to 1945. Since May 14, 1949 he was with Léon Lommel a Coadjutor Bishop to the side.
