Josip Marija Carević

Josip Marija Carević (born 16 February 1883 in Metković; † May 1945 in Dubrovnik, Croatia) was Roman Catholic priest and bishop of Dubrovnik.

Life

Josip Marija Carević came from one of the most distinguished families of Perast. He attended high school in Split. After graduation, he joined Split in the archiepiscopal seminary. In 1903 he went to study philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He received his doctorate and completed both studies with a doctorate. On October 28, 1908 he was ordained a priest in Split. From 1912 to 1915 he was editor of the leading newspapers in place. He wrote several books, Konstantin Veliki i krscanstvo ( Constantine the Great and Christianity ), Hipnotizam u svjetlu filozofije ( In the wake of hypnosis in philosophy ) and Promjene novom crkvenom zakoniku ( changes in the New Church Code). During the First World War he was chaplain; then pastor in Split. He was a member of the board of the savings bank and in business enterprises.

On April 13, 1929, he was named by Pope Pius XI. Bishop of Dubrovnik. He was consecrated on August 4, 1929 by the Archbishop of Zagreb, Antun Bauer. Co-consecrators were Kvirin Klement Bonefacic, the Bishop of Split, and Miho Pusic, Bishop of Hvar. He wrote more books 1931 O kršćanskom odgoju u obitelji ( The Education of Christian Violence ) and 1935 O Katoličkoj crkvi ( About the Catholic Church ). On the occasion of the anniversary of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in 1900., He left in 1935 to build a cross of white marble on top of Mount Srd. The cross was destroyed in 1991, but re-erected. On February 9, 1940 Emeritus Josip Marija Carevic to the office of Bishop of Dubrovnik and Pope Pius XII. appointed in the titular bishop of Aristium. He left Dubrovnik and moved to Zagreb.

In 1941 Josip Marija Carević warned against Tito's Communist partisans; He dispelled the concerns. In the spring of 1945, he disappeared. His body was not found until today.
