Joyce Hall

Joyce Clyde Hall ( born August 29, 1891 in David City, Nebraska, † October 29, 1982 in Kansas City, Missouri) was an American entrepreneur and founder of Hallmark Cards.

Life

Hall was born in 1891 in David City, Nebraska. His parents were Nancy Dudley Houston and George Nelson Hall, who left the family when Joyce was seven years old. At the age of eight he began to take on odd jobs to support his family financially.

In 1902 the family moved to Norfolk. Halls older brothers bought with another business partner a bookstore in which he worked as a salesman. 1905 Hall began to sell postcards with his brothers in the region. During this time they were able to convince more members to resume their postcards in their offer. In 1908 she began to distribute their cards under the name Norfolk Post Card Company.

To expand their business, the Hall brothers moved in 1910 to Kansas City. The 18 -year-old Hall did not finish high school. Already in 1913, the brothers launched their own shop in which they sold postcards and greetings cards. This store later became the first Hall department store. Although her shop burned down in 1915, made ​​it the brothers raise enough funds to buy a printer plant in 1916. Since then, they put forth their own cards. The need for postcards grew during the First World War to strong, since during this time, no European postcards were imported into the United States.

In the 1920s, the company expanded nationwide. In 1923 she founded the company Hall Brothers, the predecessor of Hallmark. Since 1928, the cards were sold under the brand Hallmark Cards. 1944 put Joyce C. Hall firm as a corporate slogan "When You Care Enough to Send the Very Best".

In 1954 the company name of Hall Brothers in Hallmark has changed. Currently operates Hallmark approximately 39,000 stores in more than 100 countries worldwide.

Hall was commissioned in 1966 at the age of 75 years to retirement and took care of the revitalization of downtown Kansas City. For these efforts, the Crown Center was born. Hall died in 1982 in Kansas City. He is buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in Kansas City.

Family

Hall married in 1921 Elizabeth Ann Dilday and fathered her three children, Donald J. Hall, Elizabeth Ann Hall Reid and Barbara Louise Marshall Hall.
