Jozef Chovanec

Jozef Chovanec ( born March 7, 1960 in Považská Bystrica, Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czechoslovak football player and football coach. Since 2006 he has been President of AC Sparta Prague. He has Czech citizenship.

Playing career

The former Czechoslovakian national team began his career in Dolné Kočkovce. For the 1978/79 season he undertook Sparta Prague. His army service, he completed between 1979 and 1981 at RH Cheb. Then he returned to Sparta Prague. In 1989, the defender for PSV Eindhoven, with whom he has twice been the Dutch champions and cup winners. He went back to Sparta in 1991 and finished his career there in 1995. With Sparta he was eight times champion. In 1986 he was Czechoslovak Footballer of the Year. He participated in the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

Chovanec completed 333 games in the 1st Czechoslovak league and scored 49 goals. In the first Czech league he played 48 times, eight times, he scored a goal.

For Czechoslovakia, he made 52 international caps and scored four goals.

Coach and official career

Matchday 6 of the 1996/97 season, he took over as coach at Sparta Prague. With the team he won two league titles. In 1998, he became coach of the Czech national football team. He was elected coach of the year in the Czech Republic in 1998, 1999 and 2000.

After the Czech Republic in the World Cup qualifiers in 2002 failed to Belgium, he resigned. From August 2002 to November 2003 he was coach at Marila Pribram. Then he took over the post of Sporting conductor, a position he held until early 2004. He coached the 2004 Slovak giants ŠK Slovan Bratislava. In the 2005 season he was coach of the Russian second division side FC Kuban Krasnodar. In January 2006, he took on the presidency at Sparta Prague. From autumn 2008 to autumn 2011 he was the coach of Sparta Prague again and was with the team in 2010 Czech Master.
