József Kóczián

József Kóczián [ jo ː ko ː ʒɛf tsia ː n] ( * August 4, 1926 in Budapest, † 10 December 2009) was a Hungarian table tennis player. He was a three time world champion.

Successes in Hungary

Kóczián was defender. He was four times Hungarian champion in singles, namely 1949, 1950, 1952 and 1955. Moreover, he won the title five times in double (1949, 1951-1953, 1955) as well as 1953 and 1954 in mixed doubles. From 1947 to 1955 he was nominated eight times for the World Championships. In 1953 he became world champion in doubles together with Ferenc Sido. With the Hungarian team he won in 1949 and 1952 the title. Silver he won in 1952 in singles, 1951 doubles with Ferenc Sido and, in 1950, 1951 and 1953 with the team.

In the ITTF World Ranking, he finished 1951/52, fifth place.

Emigration to Germany and Sweden

The end of 1956 Kóczián emigrated to Germany. About the refugee camp Friedland he came to Aschaffenburg, where he joined the club TuS dam. With the help of these reinforcing the men's team reached the summit of this association in the national league. As a result, he won several tournaments, he also has been used several times in the Bayern selection.

1957 moved to Kóczián Oberliga club Post SV Augsburg. In December 1957 he went to Sweden at the International Swedish Championships. After that, he never returned to Germany.

At the World Championships in 1959, he stepped under the flag of Sweden in the individual competitions.

Private

József Kócziáns sister Éva Kóczián was also a table tennis player world-class.
