Jules Levy (musician)

Jules Levy ( born April 24, 1838 in London, † November 28, 1903 in Chicago ) was a British- American composer and cornetist.

The age of five, he wanted to play cornet, but his father could buy him with his modest financial means any instrument. It was not until the age of 17 it was time that he got a cornet. In 1856 he played in the Royal Band of H. M. Grenadier Guards and in 1860 he performed solos for 30 shillings a week, in the intervals of the performances at the Princess Theatre in London. In 1861 he was a member of the Royal Opera House Orchestra. He has played in the Crystal Palace and in the Floral Hall. Between 1864 and 1876 he gave concerts throughout Europe and was in 1866 on a concert tour in the United States of America. In the summer of 1869 he was again in the United States of America and has performed with the Theodore Thomas Orchestra in New York. In 1871 he played in Fiske 's Cornet band.

After attending a concert of Fiske 's Cornet band, Jules Levy appeared as a soloist in the Grand Duke Alexis of Russia invited him to his estate in Russia. There he was asked by the Czar, if he did not want to be a conductor of Gardemusik of the Tsar and Imperial cornet. This offer he refused to accept, but remained for 20 months in Russia, then first give a concert in the UK at the London Proms and later at the Hippodrome in New York City.

In 1876 he joined the Henry Gilmore's band and played every day at the World Exhibition in Philadelphia. At the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge on May 24, 1883, he performed brilliantly with one of his specially arranged version of The Star- Spangled Banner and Hail, Columbia.

From 1878, he was with Edison as the first cornet LP recordings ( 15 for the Columbia label, and 23 for the label Victor ). In 1892 he founded the Levy American Military Band, but which did not exist for long, because in 1895 it was dissolved. He was then hired by the instrument contractor CG CONN Elkhart, Indiana as an instrument tester and lectured on cornet Conn Conservatory of Music. When he botched with the company owner, he moved to Lyon Healy band Instrument Company in Chicago ..
