Julia Culp

Julia Bertha Culp ( born October 6, 1880 in Groningen, The Netherlands, † October 13, 1970 in Amsterdam) was an internationally celebrated Dutch mezzo - soprano. She was known as the " Dutch nightingale ".

Your singing career began with an appearance on December 30, 1893 as 13 - year-old girl in Groote Bovenzaal harmony in Groningen. Whether she had singing lessons already at this time, is not known. There is evidence that they at the Conservatory of Amsterdam took up vocal studies in the summer of 1896. There she studied with van Zanten Cornélie and graduated in 1900 with a diploma.

Whether they already moved in 1901 to Berlin or only in connection with the marriage to Erich Merten ( co-owner of the company Merten & Knauff, Berlin) on 29 June 1905 is not quite sure. Occupied, however, is that they continue their singing technique trained in Berlin with Elka Gerster.

Except in Germany and the Netherlands, she has also performed internationally with great success. She is considered one of the best mezzo- sopranos of her time.
