Julie Wolfthorn

Julie Wolfthorn (also Wolf- Thorn, nee Wolf or Wolff; born January 8, 1864 in Thorn, West Prussia, † December 29, 1944 in ghetto Theresienstadt ) was a German painter and graphic artist.

Life

Julie Wolf Thorn was born under the name Julie Wolf ( f), the youngest child of a middle-class Jewish family in Thorn; to their four siblings belonged to the sculptor Georg Wolf. From 1890 she studied painting and graphic arts in Berlin, after a stay in Paris, she returned to Berlin, where she for decades now -defunct House Kurfürstenstrasse lived 50. 1898 she was one of four women founding member of the Berlin Secession. Since 1898 she was a member of the "Association of the artists and art lovers Berlin". In 1904 she married the art historian and critic Rudolf Klein - Diepoldsberg ( 1871-1925 ). 1905 signed Julie Wolfthorn with over 200 artists a petition calling for approval at the Prussian Academy of Arts, which was rejected by the academy director Anton von Werner. In 1906 she founded with Käthe Kollwitz the exhibition community "Connection Visual Artists ', 1912, she was elected to the board with Käthe Kollwitz and the jury of the Secession, 1933, she was excluded with Fanny Remak, who emigrated to England from the board. Julie Wolfthorn remained in Berlin and worked with the Cultural Association of German Jews. 1941, the Cultural Association was banned, arrested the employees and confiscated assets of the association.

On October 28, 1942 Julie Wolf Thorn was at the age of 78 years along with her sister Luise Wolf with the " 68th Age transport " deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto. There they drew, so far her under the circumstances was possible. She survived here two years and died a few days before her 81st birthday.

At Julie Wolfthorn recalls since 2005, the name of a new road at Berlin's North Station. A plaque at the site of the former Luise Lyceum in the brick road 12 calls as a prominent student. 2002 stumbling blocks were placed in front of the house Kurfürstenstrasse 50 for her and her sister.

Works

Julie Wolfthorn was known primarily for her portraiture. She portrayed Ida Dehmel, Richard Dehmel, Hedda Owl Mountain, Gerhart Hauptmann ( in a double portrait with his wife Margaret ), Gabriele Reuter, the family members of the writing and translating pair Hedwig Lachmann and Gustav Landauer, the family of the architect Hermann Muthesius, the doctors Salomon Neumann and Carl Ludwig Schleich, opera singer Irmgard Scheffner, many actresses such as Carola Neher, Tilla Durieux, or - and other famous contemporaries, primarily from the Berlin society, including especially many dedicated women.

From 15 June to 13 October 2013 exhibition ran across her work in the bark Hoff - former residence of Heinrich Vogeler - in Worpswede.
