Julita Abbey

The monastery Julita (also Säby, latin Saba ) is a former Cistercian monastery in Sweden. The monastery was in Södermanland in the municipality Katrine Holm.

History

The monastery was founded in 1160 as a daughter house of the monastery Alvastra from the filiation of Clairvaux Abbey in primary Viby in Sigtuna. Thanks to a gift of King Knut Eriksson it was moved in 1180 after Säby (hence the Latin name Saba ) on Öljaren Lake in the parish Julita. The convent was expropriated during the Reformation in 1527 and demolished it.

The church was rebuilt after a fire in 1382. The cloister lay to the south of the existing, built around 1670 Herrenhof, the church was partially under the south wing of the present corps de logis. The western end of the previous Konversenbaus is preserved in the present mansion.
