Julius Mařák

Julius Mařák ( born March 29, 1832 in Litomyšl; † October 8, 1899 in Prague ) was a Czech- Bohemian landscape painters between romanticism and realism.

Life

Julius Mařák, was born as the son of Books auditor and land leader Litomyšl Jan Mařák. He grew up in a middle-class educated parents house where he and his nine siblings enjoyed both a good school as well as spiritual advancement. Even as a high school student he took painting lessons at the genre and portrait painter A. Dvořák, although he initially could not decide between a musical and a picturesque career,. In 1852 he then began painting in the landscape class of Max Haushofer to study at the Prague Academy, but he left in the fall of 1853 to continue in Munich at Leopold Rottmann and Eduard Schleich his education. Beginning in 1855 began his " wandering years ," as he called them. In the northern and southern mountain regions of Bohemia, he found the impressions for his painting - the moods that influenced his artistic work.

He then spent a long time in Vienna, in which he at J. K. Schmidt, the graphical technique of etching learned. From 1860 he also gave drawing lessons and worked in Vienna for several local magazines as an illustrator. The influence of the Barbizon school was now unmistakably in his work, although he had never resided in France and also always loved the romance. The other stages of his life were a Balkan tour in 1869 and a stay in Tyrol 1872-1875 ., There he gained crucial impressions.

He received in 1882 the order to cooperate in the development of the National Theatre in Prague. 1887, now already a famous painter, Julius Mařák was appointed at the proposal of the conveyor Josef Hlávka at the Prague Academy to conduct the class of landscape painting. Here he has the Czech landscape painting up to the beginning of the 20th century significantly influenced. His pupils were, inter alia, Otakar Lebeda, František Kaván, Antonín Slavíček and Bohuslav Dvořák.

In 1893 he became seriously ill. He was no longer able to fulfill the mandate entrusted to him in 1895 for Prague's National Museum, so he had to rely on the help of his students. Nevertheless, he has worked artistically until his death on October 8, 1899.
