Julius Wernher

Sir Julius Wernher Charles ( born April 9, 1850 in Darmstadt, † May 21, 1912 ) was a born in Germany diamond merchant and art collector, who belonged to the English establishment.

Life

Wernher was born in Darmstadt, Hesse, and formed in a Bank in Frankfurt. 1871, at age 21, he moved to London, where Jules Porges discovered his talent for business. Porges was an important diamond merchant with company Porges & Cie, Paris. He sent Wernher in 1873 as his representative and diamonds buyers to the diamond mines in Kimberley, Cape Colony.

In Kimberley learned Wernher Alfred Beit, who became also like Wernher 1880 Partner of Porges & Cie. 1890 Jules Porges moved to go out of business and Beit and Wernher founded as a successor company Wernher, Beit & Co. Along with Wernher Beit had great success in the diamond and gold trade, he became one of the richest men in England of his time. His fortune was about 12 million pounds to the time of his death. In 1905 he was awarded the noble title of baronet.

Art

Wernher created a rich art collection, which is largely seen in the Ranger's House in Greenwich.
