Jundah, Queensland

Jundah is a small settlement and center of the county Barcoo Shire with about 68 inhabitants ( 2010) in the southwest of the Australian state of Queensland. It is located on the Thomson River, and is about 1122 km from the capital of Queensland, Brisbane.

The name means Jundah in a local Aboriginal language as much as "Mrs. " It was founded in 1883 by dairy farmers who were resident in the area.

The village in 1920 was known to Jundah numerous opals were found to be in the area. Although the Opalfunde were significant, had to give up because of lack of water many seekers. In the 1970s and especially in the 1980s, the mines were taken around Jundah ( Opalville ) back into operation. Some of the most expensive opals come from the region Jundah, was sold including the "Galaxy " Boulder Opal, which found in 1989 and 2003, more than 1.2 million Australian dollars.

Today Jundah is the administrative center for the Barcoo Shire. In Jundah there is a police station, a small shop, a post office and a school.
