History

The medieval name Kamenik ( Каменник ) is not safe in use. Under the Turkish rule, the village was called Kaja Bey Koj ( Кая бей кьой, literally: stone village of Beys ). During the reign of the Romanians ( 1913-1940 the whole area belonged to Romania, see History of Dobruja ) it was Stanka ( Стънка ).

Some of the villagers are settlers from the Balkan Mountains, other settlers from Romania during the political turmoil of the 40s (see: History of Dobruja ).

The neighboring village Balgarewo ( Българево ) was a Gagauz village ( Turkish-speaking, Greek Orthodox population).

Three kilometers south of the village lies the nature reserve and historical ( archaeological site ) Jailata ( Яйлата ) with 4,000 -year-old Thracian tombs, an altar, were sacrificed on the animals and stone houses. At the entrance to the archaeological site a Thracian sun altar was discovered. Further north lie the remains of a fortress from the early Byzantine period (5th century). The almost inaccessible area is home to rare plants and from the water many caves can be reached.

On the bluffs south and north of the village there are a number of megalithic monuments.

Located northwest of the village there is a large grave mound with Scythian graves.

Cape Kaliakra is located 5 km south of the village. Next to it is in an oak forest in the nature reserve Taukliman (along the Via pontica ), the Village Rusalka ( "Mermaid "). Today, the resort is also open to visitors.

10 km further north lie the fishing lakes and Dourankoulak Schabla ( Durankulaksk esero, 45 hectares, just outside the village Duranlak located ), 6 km from the Bulgarian- Romanian border, the main wintering area of red-breasted goose.
