Kaplan is a city in Vermilion Parish in the south of the U.S. state of Louisiana.

History

Kaplan was founded in 1902, Abrom Kaplan, a Polish immigrant and pioneer of the rice industry, namesake and founder. At that time there spoke French as most residents were Acadians. The rice industry founded by Kaplan there became one of the most successful in the region, she has owned and operated several locations in Crowley, Abbeville, Gueydan, and some other places on the western Mississippi River. In 1911 the theater was built Eleazar. 1916 Kaplan Telephone Company was incorporated. 1903, the first school was gegbaut, 1920 she was overhauled. Of the former settlers grain, cotton, sugar cane, peas, watermelon and especially rice were grown.

Geography

Kaplan located 32 kilometers southwest of Lafayette and 16 kilometers west of Abbeville.

Population

According to the census of 2000 5.177 people in 2,069 households, and 1,342 families residing in Kaplan live. 25.8 % of the population are under 18 years old, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.7 % are older than 65 years. The average age is 37 100 females 86.8 men come.
