Kara River

Lower reaches of Kara

The Kara (Russian Кара ) is a tributary of the Kara Sea in northern Russia.

The Kara is formed at the confluence of Bolschaja Kara ( Большая Кара, 32 km) and Malaya Kara ( Малая Кара, 30 km ) at the foot of the Polar Urals. It flows along the west flank of the Urals in predominantly northerly direction, forming the boundary between the Republic of Komi and the Nenets Autonomous District of the West, and the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District in the east. The Kara opens at Ust- Kara in the Baidarazkaja Bay ( Байдарацкая губа ) in the southern Kara Sea. The Kara has a length of 257 km. It drains an area of 13,400 km ². Between June and October, the river is free of ice. In the lower reaches the Kara is navigable.
