Karekare, New Zealand

Karekare is a small coastal settlement in the north of the North Island of New Zealand. Here go the Waitakere Ranges on in a covered with black sand beach.

The town is located 35 km west from the city center of Auckland, south of the larger beach of Piha. To the south lies Whatipu, in the north Piha. In the east, the Centennial Memorial Park and Water Catchment area, which includes most of the natural bush of the Waitakere Ranges is located. At the 2001 census the town had 2,397 inhabitants.

Karekare is in summer a popular destination for the people of Auckland, but has retained much of its natural beauty and isolation. It does not have as many visitors as Piha, partly because of the narrow street, which was fixed only recently.

The settlement was founded in 1993 sung by Crowded House on their album Together Alone, which was taken to a large extent here. The film The Piano shows footage on the beach of Karekare and Piha.

The undercurrents of this coast line are unpredictable and may change without warning. Despite the work here lifeguards there were many casualties, but most people who went swimming after work hours of the lifeguards or anglers who were rinsed in heavy clothes of the rocks.
