Karel Poma

Karel Emiel Hubert Baron Poma ( born March 14, 1920 in Antwerp ) is a former Belgian politician of the Partij voor de Vrijheid Vooruitgang (PVV ).

Biography

The son of the former mayor of the Antwerp district Wilrijk studied at Ghent University, where he took after the Second World War from his doctorate in natural sciences. He then worked as a chemist and bacteriologist at the Antwerp waterworks and was there until 1971 Head of the Laboratory.

In 1965, he began his political career with election as a member of the Senate, where he served as representative of the PVV to 1971. Subsequently, he was a member of the Chamber of Deputies in 1971 and belonged to this until 1981.

In April 1974, he was appointed by Prime Minister Leo Tindemans Secretary of State for the Environment in the Cabinet, is this up to a government reshuffle in 1977. Here, a member of the extended government was solely responsible for environmental issues for the first time.

He was also a 1976-1988 member of the municipal councils of Wilrijk and Antwerp 1977-1981 representatives of the Chamber of Deputies in the Flemish Parliament. After retiring from the House of Representatives 1981, he was again Senator and retains this position until 1985.

As of 1981, the Flemish Region gets its own Regional Government, he is appointed by the Prime Minister Gaston Geens Vice Prime Minister and simultaneously takes until 1985 the post of Minister of Culture. As such, he is also responsible for fine arts, libraries, radio and television, sports, youth, cultural heritage, science and research as well as international cultural relations. Successor as Flemish Minister of Culture was Patrick Dewael.

For his services he was lifted in 2005 by King Albert II as Baron in the peerage. In addition, the awarded every two years Prijs van het Vrijzinnig Humanisme he was awarded on 21 June 2009. Recently he was awarded on December 7, 2009, with Melchior Wathelot André Flahaut and the honorary title of Minister of State.

Poma is also well Freemason and a member of the Masonic Lodges Les Elèves de Thémis Anvers, Antwerp Het Truweel en de Geuzen and trigone Antwerp.
