Karl Aagard Østvig

Karl Aagard Østvig, sometimes Oestvig ( born May 17, 1889 in Christiania, † July 21, 1968 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian opera tenor, opera director and voice teacher.

Life

Østvig took private singing lessons in Germany with Wilhelm Cappele Kloed and studied at the Cologne University of Music with Fritz Steinbach and Ludwig Wüllner later. In 1914 he made ​​his debut as a tenor at the Staatsoper Stuttgart, where he was the next five years Staff artist. In 1915 he played there the lay brother Giovanni Salviati in the world premiere of the opera Mona Lisa by Max von Schillings. In 1917 he was a guest singer at the Theater Basel, and in 1919 at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich.

Østvig in the period 1919-1926 was the first tenor of the Vienna State Opera. During this time he met at the opera Maria Raidl, whom he married. In 1919 he sang at the premiere of the opera Die Frau ohne Schatten by Richard Strauss, libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal in Vienna. In 1923 he made ​​an extensive concert tour of Europe and North America. In 1926, he guested at the Hungarian State Opera House in Budapest and the Hamburg State Opera.
