Karl Ferdinand Sohn

Karl Ferdinand Sohn ( born December 10, 1805 in Berlin, † November 25, 1867 in Cologne ) was a German painter.

Life

With 18 years son was at the Art Academy in Berlin was a student of Wilhelm von Schadow. Along with several other students followed son Schadow 1826 Dusseldorf at the art academy. For his first paintings was son of the subjects in the ancient world, but he also addressed works of literature, such as Torquato Tasso by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, among others

The years 1832-1855 and later again from 1859 to 1863 taught son as a lecturer at the Dusseldorf Academy. When one of his main disciples here is Anselm Feuerbach mentioned. But son influence on the Düsseldorf school of painting is not be underestimated. For the festival of German unity, the citizens, artists and Turner on August 6, 1848 in Dusseldorf as a political demonstration of their demand for a large German unit lined up under the roof of a constitutional monarchy, son created the monumental figure of Germania from wood, canvas and cardboard.

Karl Ferdinand Sohn married on January 18, 1834 in Dusseldorf Emilie Auguste of Mülmann. His sons were the portrait and genre painter Paul Edouard Richard son and Carl Friedrich Rudolph son. The latter married Else Rethel, daughter of the painter Alfred Rethel. The painter Wilhelm son was his nephew and pupil.

At the age of nearly 62 years, Karl Ferdinand died son on November 25, 1867 during a visit to his friend Ferdinand Hiller in Cologne.
