Karl Graul

Karl Friedrich Leberecht Graul ( born February 6, 1814 Wörlitz (Anhalt), † November 10, 1864 in Erlangen, Germany ) served as a Lutheran theologian. As mission director, mission scientists and Dravidologe he laid the foundations for the German mission science.

Life and work

Born the son of a master weaver, he attended high school in Dessau, before he studied theology in Leipzig 1834-38. After he worked for some time as a private tutor, he became in 1844 director of the Evangelical Lutheran Mission Society to Dresden ( Dresden Mission ), from shortly after the Evangelical Lutheran Mission was to Leipzig ( Leipzig Mission ). Main attention paid Grauls was the strict adherence of the mission to the Lutheran confession and an associated extensive missionary training. Missionaries should go as ordained theologians have sufficient knowledge of the local languages ​​in the mission areas. Graul himself was a linguist and mastered Italian, French, English, Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Tamil, Persian, Sanskrit, and Hindustani.
