Karl Hudson-Phillips

Karl Terrence Hudson -Phillips QC (* April 20, 1933; † January 15, 2014 in London ) was a lawyer from Trinidad and Tobago and was from 2003 to 2007 Judge at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Life

Hudson -Phillips studied law at Selwyn College, Cambridge, earning a Bachelor of Arts there in 1955 and 1956, a Bachelor of Law degree in comparative jurisprudence. In 1959 he graduated from Cambridge University with a Master of Arts.

In 1959 he was admitted to the bar in the English Bar Gray 's Inn, as well as in Trinidad and Tobago. From 1970 he was Attorney-General in Trinidad and Tobago and from 1971 Senior Counsel in Guyana. Hudson -Phillips worked as a lawyer beyond the Caribbean, as in Jamaica ( since 1974 ) in Antigua and Barbuda ( since 1977), Grenada ( 1983 ) and in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla, the Bahamas, St. Lucia, Barbados and the British Virgin Islands (all since 1985).

Hudson -Phillips was from 1966 to 1976 the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago to and served from 1969 to 1973 as minister of justice in the country. In 1974 he founded the National Land Tenants and Ratepayers Association, which campaigned for a reform of the land law. In 1980 he was a founder of the Party Organisation for National Reconstruction, which participated in the national elections in 1981, 1983, a coalition government with the National Alliance under Basdeo Panday, Arthur NR Robinson and Lloyd Best was received and 1986 officially with this the National Alliance for Reconstruction merged which then won the elections in the same year itself.

2003 Hudson -Phillips was elected on the list A for a term of nine years as a judge to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, where he was assigned to the Trial Division. He served as chairman in the first sessions of the Court until the election of President and Vice President. He also participated actively in the drafting of the Rules of Court. On 14 March 2007 he took effect on 30 September 2007 back for personal reasons from his post. As part of the necessary by his resignation and the resignation of Judge Claude Jorda and Maureen Harding Clark election were elected to the Court Daniel David Nsereko Ntanda from Uganda, Fumiko Saiga of Japan and Bruno Cotte from France.

On 23 July 2010 Hudson -Phillips was appointed by the President of the UN Human Rights Council with the guidance of a Board of Inquiry into the Ship-to- Gaza incident. The Commission concluded in its report concluded that Israel's actions during the siege was " disproportionate" and a " totally unnecessary and incredible level of violence " tools.

On January 15, 2014 he died in London.
