Karol Ferdynand Vasa

Charles Ferdinand Vasa (Polish Karol Ferdynand Waza; * October 13, 1613 in Warsaw, † May 9, 1655 in Wyszków ) was a Polish prince of the dynasty of Vasa, Bishop of Płock, Duke of Opole and Ratibor and as Bishop of Breslau, in real union with the Principality of Neisse, Prince of Neisse.

Life

His parents were King Sigismund III. Wasa and Constanze of Austria. The Polish kings Władysław IV Vasa, and John II Casimir Cardinal John Albert Vasa were his brothers.

Although Karl Ferdinand had received no higher orders, he became in 1624 a canon on the Wrocław Cathedral and at the same time coadjutor of his uncle, the Bishop of Breslau Karl of Austria. After his death in late 1624, he was elected on May 3, 1625 Bishop of Breslau. Since he had visited Breslau only a few times, the diocese of Bishop Johann Balthasar Liesch of Hornau was administered.

In addition to his Breslauer Episcopate took place in 1640 election as Bishop of Płock; besides, he was administrator of the Cistercian Abbey of Mogila.

Since 1651, he was also duke of the duchies of Opole and Ratibor that were in the possession of the pledge Wasa.

After his death he was buried in Warsaw's Jesuit church. In the Cracow Cathedral a cenotaph was erected for him.
