Bobko studied aviation and aerospace engineering and received a bachelor's degree in 1959 from the United States Air Force Academy, and in 1970 a master's degree from the University of Southern California.

1960 got Bobko after his training by the United States Air Force on the Bartow Air Base in Florida and the Vance Air Force Base in Oklahoma his pilot's license. From 1961 to 1965 he was employed at Air Force bases in New Mexico, North Carolina and California.

Astronauts activity

In June 1966, he was selected by the United States Air Force as an astronaut for the Manned Orbiting Laboratory - program ( MOL), which however has not been implemented.

After the Air Force gave the MOL program, some of the dedicated astronauts were taken by NASA in August 1969, including Bobko. There he participated in the Skylab Medical Experiments Altitude Test, a 56 -day Skylab simulation on Earth. Bobko was a member of the support crews for the Apollo - Soyuz Project (ASTP ) and for the final approach and landing tests of the Space Shuttle at Edwards Air Force Base. When the shuttle tests, he also acted as a spokesman connection ( CAPCOM ) and as a replacement pilot. Also on the preparations for the first shuttle launch of Columbia ( STS -1) Bobko was involved.

STS -6

On April 4, 1983 Bobko flew as pilot on the maiden flight of the Space Shuttle Challenger for the first time into space. The charge consisted of the satellites TDRS -1 ( Tracking and Data Relay Satellite ) and some experiments. This mission also the first spacewalk was conducted by a space shuttle.

STS -41 -F

STS -41 -F was scheduled for August 1984 with the discovery. This would have been the first flight of Discovery, if it had not been canceled due to delays in payload. As the occupying Karol Bobko, Donald Williams, Rhea Seddon, David Griggs and Jeffrey Hoffman were provided. The flight was STS -51 -E.

STS -51- E

This flight of the Challenger was canceled due to problems of the IUS upper stage. It should have been exposed to a TDRS satellite. As the occupying Karol Bobko, Donald Williams, Rhea Seddon, David Griggs, Jeffrey Hoffman, the French payload specialist Patrick Baudry and politicians Jake Garn were provided.

STS -51- D

On 12 April 1985, the Space Shuttle Discovery with Bobko began as a commander in the space. Payload this time were the two satellites TELESAT -9 and LEASAT - third

STS 51 -J

Next, Bobko commanded on 3 October 1985 the maiden flight of the Space Shuttle Atlantis. Also on board was a secret payload of the U.S. Department of Defense.

1988 Bobko different from from NASA and the Air Force and worked at the company Booz Allen Hamilton in Houston (Texas ).

From 2000, he was Vice President of Product Development at SPACEHAB Inc..

2005 Bobko came to SAIC, where he is the program manager for the support of the NASA Ames Simulation Laboratories ( SimLabs ). SimLabs consists of three flight simulator systems, which are used for public and private purposes.
