Karun-3 Dam

Karun -3 is the name of a large dam on the Karun River in Khuzestan province in Iran, which was built to generate electricity and completed in 2004. On November 8, 2004, she was inaugurated and impounded in the presence of the Minister of Energy.

The Karun is the most water, and longest navigable river in Iran the only one. The dam of 60 km dam is an arch dam located 28 km east of Izeh, 140 km away from Ahvaz and 120 km upstream of the dam Karun -1 ( Shahid Abbaspur Dam ). Planning for the project began in 1978 and were carried out by a Iranian- Canadian joint venture. The dam was built on a solid calcareous marly sedimentary rocks in seismically active western Zagros Mountains.

The dam has three spillways with drain services from 8700, 1500 and 2800 m³ / s, together 13,300 m³ / s The power station cavern in which eight Francis turbines and generators with a capacity of 250 MW ( 2,000 MW combined ) are housed, is located 500 m below the dam in the bedrock. It has the dimensions length × width × height = 250,40 m × 25.43 m × 47.70 m.

The crown length is alternatively specified instead of 831 m with 388 or 462 m.
