Kasaragod ( Malayalam: കാസര്ഗോഡ് Kasargod [ ka ː ː ɖ sərɡo ]; Also: Kasargod, Kasargode ) is a city in the southern Indian state of Kerala with 52 683 inhabitants ( 2001 census). It is located on the Malabar coast in the north of Kerala, close to the border of the neighboring Federal state of Karnataka, at the mouth of the river Chandragiri ( Payaswini ) in the Arabian Sea. The next largest cities are Mangalore 50 kilometers north and Kozhikode ( Calicut ) 185 kilometers to the south. Kasaragod is the administrative seat of the district of Kasaragod.

Kasaragod was early an important port and a center of overseas trade with Arabia. In the 14th century the city came under the rule of the Vijayanagar Empire. After its decline in the 16th century, the Nayak of Ikkeri took control of the coastal area. During the reign of the Nayaks, the Chandragiri Fort in the 17th century was on the other side of the Chandagiri River. End of the 18th century Tippu Sultan conquered, the ruler of Mysore Kasaragod. After Tipu Sultan's defeat by the British in 1799, the city came to British India and was as of district South Kanara ( Dakshina Kannada ) incorporated into the Madras Presidency. After the Indian independence in 1947 the states were reorganized in 1956 by the States Reorganisation Act by language barriers. Kasaragod was thereby dissolved because of its predominantly Malayalam - speaking population from the district of Dakshina Kannada district and slammed Kannur of the newly founded state of Kerala. In 1984, the city council seat of the district of Kasaragod.

Kasaragod is a pretty strong predominantly Muslim city. In the district Thalangara is built in the traditional Keralite architecture style Malik Dinar Mosque, which was allegedly founded by Malik Ibn Dinar said to have brought Islam in the 7th century to Kerala. The mosque houses the grave of Malik Ibn Mohammed, a descendant of Malik Ibn Dinar. Furthermore, located in Kasaragod Hindu Mallikarjuna Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva.
