Kannur district

The district Kannur ( Malayalam: കണ്ണൂര് ജില്ല, formerly Cannanore ) is a district in the southern Indian state of Kerala. Council is based in the eponymous city of Kannur.

Geography

The district Kannur is located on the Malabar coast in the north of Kerala. It is bordered to the west by the Arabian Sea, to the north by Kasaragod District, in the northeast on neighboring federal state of Karnataka ( Kodagu District ), on the southeast by the Wayanad District and on the south by the Kozhikode District. The belonging to the union territory of Puducherry enclave of Mahe is surrounded entirely by the area of the district of Kannur. The district Kannur has an area of 2,966 square kilometers and extends from the coast to the mountains of the Western Ghats.

The district Kannur is divided into three taluks Taliparamba, Kannur and Thalasserry.

History

The area of present-day Kannur district got up early under the influence of European colonial powers: From the beginning of the 16th century, the city Kannur became one of the first points of the Portuguese in India, mid 17th century, Kannur was then under Dutch rule. The British sat down, however, in 1682 in Thalassery ( Tellicherry ) fixed, while the French were talking a base in neighboring Southern Mahé. As a result, the Mysore Wars, the entire territory of present-day district in 1792 was incorporated into a part of British India and was conducted as part of the district of Malabar in the Madras Presidency.

After Indian independence, the state of Kerala was formed in the wake of the States Reorganisation Act by the limits of language Malayalam from the district of Malabar and Travancore -Cochin of the Federation 1956. Here, the district Kannur was formed from the northern parts of the former district of Malabar. At the same time the north adjoining area came to the town of Kasaragod, which had belonged to the district of South Kanara previously ( Dakshina Kannada ) to Kerala and was annexed to the district of Kannur. 1984 this area was re-dissolved as a separate district from the district of Kannur Kasaragod.

Population

According to the 2011 census, the district Kannur has 2,525,637 inhabitants. Between 2001 and 2011 the population grew by 4.8 percent. The growth rate corresponds to the mean of Kerala (4.9 per cent). The population density is 852 inhabitants per square kilometer, close to the average of the state ( 859 inhabitants per square kilometer). 65.1 percent of the residents of District Kannur live in cities. The degree of urbanization is significantly higher than the average of Kerala ( 47.7 per cent). The literacy rate is 95.4 percent slightly above the already high average of 93.9 percent of Kerala.

Hindus ask according to the 2001 census, 61.5 percent of the majority of the inhabitants of the district of Kannur. To Islam profess 27.6 percent of the population, Christians make up 10.8 percent.
