Kazimierz Jonkisz

Kazimierz Jonkisz ( born November 9, 1948 in Wilamowice ) is a Polish drummer of modern jazz.

Life and work

Jonkisz received from the age of ten years, accordion lessons, before switching to drums. At 18, he won in 1967 on the Wroclaw Festival Jazz nad Odra the soloist competition. In 1971 he received the Komeda Prize of the Academy of Music in Katowice. In the following years he worked with Tomasz Stanko, Zbigniew Namysłowski ( Winobranie, 1973), Adam Makowicz Jan Ptaszin Wroblewski, Michał Urbaniak and Bronisław Suchanek ( Just Friends ).

Since 1978, he led his own groups; In 1980 he recorded his debut album. Overall, he has been involved since 1966 in more than 70 albums, including Marek Grechuta; in the field of jazz he was 30 times in the recording studio. He also accompanied musicians such as Al Cohn, Roy Hargrove, Larry Coryell, Amina Claudine Myers, Monty Waters, Eddie Henderson, Kevin Mahogany, Larry Goldings and Tim Hagans. He entered at international festivals such as the Jazz Jamboree, Molde Jazz, the Bergamo Jazz Festival Jazz Ost -West, Havana Jazz Festival or Temecula International Jazz Festival.

Since 1992 he has taught percussion in the jazz department of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw.
