Kearny is a city in Pinal County, Arizona in the United States.

Geography

The city is located about 110 kilometers southeast of Phoenix and 90 kilometers north of Tucson. She is also on the Gila River and the Arizona State Route 177 sister cities are Hayden and Winkelmann. The local Kearny Airport is located on the outskirts.

History

Originally the territory of today's Kearny was controlled by the Apaches. In the 17th and 18th century Spanish explorers visited the area, but could not build permanent settlements because of the Apaches. Even with immigrants from Mexico, there were bitter conflicts with the natives. It was not until 1820 that the first Americans arrived in the region, which were trappers and mostly came from Taos, New Mexico. The city was eventually named after General Stephen W. Kearny, who made ​​there in 1846 during the Mexican-American War, with 100 dragoons station. Soon after minerals have been found in the area. Following bloody fighting the Apaches were expelled. Thereafter the number of new settlers started to increase rapidly.
