Kenan Malik

Kenan Malik, FRSA ( born January 26, 1960 in India ) is a British writer, university lecturer and radio journalist of Indian origin. As a science writer he focuses on the philosophy of biology, and contemporary theories of multiculturalism, pluralism and race concept.

Academic career

Malik was born in India and grew up in Manchester. He studied history and philosophy of science at Imperial College in London and neurobiology at the University of Sussex. At the Centre for Research into Perception and Cognition ( CRPC ) he was temporarily employed in psychological research.

He was a lecturer at several universities, including the Institute of Biological Anthropology, University of Cambridge, the St Antony 's College and the Institute of Education of the University of Oxford, Institute of Historical Research in London; the Institute for Social Anthropology from Goldsmiths College in London, the Institute of Politics at the University of Liverpool and the Institute for Social Policy and Sociology, University of Newcastle. Furthermore, he had lectureships at Nottingham Trent University, the University of Oslo and the European University in Florence. In 2003 he was a visiting fellow at the University of Melbourne.

He has published in various journals, including The Guardian, Financial Times, the Independent, Independent on Sunday, Sunday Times, Sunday Telegraph, New Statesman, Prospect, TLS, The Times Higher Education Supplement and Nature. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and one of the moderators of the Political Analysis magazine of the BBC Radio 4

Academic priorities

The focus of his academic interest are the philosophy of biology and spirit, scientific methodology and epistemology, the theory of human nature, science policy, bioethics, political philosophy, history, philosophy and sociology of the race concept and the history of ideas.

His book "The Meaning of Race" ( The meaning of race ) examines the historical development and the philosophical and political roots of the race concept. It also deals with the relationship between the concept of race and the contemporary theories of multiculturalism and pluralism. " Man, Beast and Zombie" ( humans, animals and zombie ) explores the historical causes, philosophical and theological views and methodological problems of contemporary theories of human nature, especially the theory of knowledge and evolutionary psychology. The book not yet published "The Museum of Difference " ( The Museum of the difference ) deals with the relationship between scientific and political concepts of human differences, as well as between the concepts of human nature and human differences.
