Kenneth Dover

Sir Kenneth James Dover FRSE FBA ( born March 11, 1920 in London, † March 7, 2010 in St. Andrews ) was a British Hellenist.

Kenneth Dover attended St Paul 's School and then went to Balliol College, Oxford. During the Second World War he served in the British artillery. After the war he returned to Oxford and earned a second degree. In 1955 it was Professor of Ancient Greek Philology at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. 1975 Dover was elected to the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1977 was knighted for his services as a university teacher. He was from 1978 to 1981 the presidency of the British Academy, which he was a member since 1966.

He left Scotland in 1976 to become president of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. From 1981 until his retirement in December 2005, he was chancellor of the University of St. Andrews. Kenneth Dover, died 7 March 2010 shortly before his 90th birthday.

Dover was in 1947 with Audrey Latimer ( * 1920, † December 2009) Married. The couple had a son and a daughter.

Dover has received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Oxford, St Andrews, Birmingham, Bristol, London, Durham, Liverpool and Oglethorpe.
