Kenneth Keith

Sir Kenneth Keith KBE, QC, ONZ ( born November 19, 1937 in Auckland ) is a New Zealand lawyer. Since February 6, 2006, he is a judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Life

Keith studied from 1956 to 1965 Law at the University of Auckland, Victoria University of Wellington and Harvard Law School. From 1961 he worked as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand.

From 1962 to 1964 and from 1966 to 1991 Keith was a member of the teaching staff at Victoria University of Wellington and had from 1977 to 1981, the Office of the Dean held. He was also a visiting professor at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto in the academic year 1981/82.

From 1960 to 1962 Keith worked in the legal department of the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was from 1968 to 1970 a member of the Office of Legal Affairs at the United Nations.

Keith was appointed in 1996 a judge of the New Zealand Court of Appeal and in 2004 moved to the newly established Supreme Court of New Zealand, where he worked until 2005. He is also in Samoa and the Cook Islands and Niue since 1995 since 1982 judge of appeal. In 2003 he was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of Fiji.

After Keith was already 1973, 1974 and 1995 was a member of the team that represented New Zealand in the Nuclear Tests cases before the International Court of Justice in The Hague, he was appointed on 6 February 2006 for a term of nine years as a judge at the ICJ. He is the first New Zealand judge in the history of the institution.

Keith is co-editor of Public Law Review, the New Zealand Law Review, the Journal of Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand and New Zealand Journal of Public and International Law.

From 2000 to 2007 he was president of the New Zealand Institute of International Relations.

Awards

Keith was awarded in 1988 for his contributions to law reform and legal education of the title of Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire. In 1994 he was appointed Attorney-General and appointed to the Order of New Zealand in 2007. The University of Auckland and Victoria University of Wellington awarded him beyond an honorary doctorate (2001 and 2004 ). In addition, he belongs since 2003 to the Institut de Droit International.
