View from Villach to Mittagskoge

The Mittagskoge, Slovenian Kepa ( Carinthian - Slovenian Jepa ) is, with a height of 2145 m above sea level. A. one of the highest mountains in the western Karawanken. It is located on the Austrian- Slovenian border.

Location and construction

The mountain is located in the municipality of Finkenstein am Faaker See (Carinthia ) and Kranjska Gora (Slovenia ) between the villages of Latschach am Faaker lake in Klagenfurt basin and Dovje in the valley of the river Sava Dolinka. The border runs across the summit along the Drava -Sava watershed and is the highest point of the mountain with the landmark XXVI/214 ( 2143 m) in. The somewhat lower altitudes summit cross is located just north of it immediately at the highest point of the north wall ( 2142 m, landmark XXVI/215 ). The summit of Mittagskogel is constructed by a roughly 600 to 700 meters thick bed of friable Hauptdolomit and thick gebanktem Dachstein Limestone. This goes in deeper layers into Hornsteinkalk, Schlern dolomite and limestone, which are peak forming at the neighboring mountains.

Origin of the name

The name Mittagskoge, as a typical twelve - mountain, is Schloss Rosegg from named (just to the north is Oberferlach ). In Slovene the mountain is called Kepa or Jepa, dialect also Kum ( area Ossiacher Tauern ), whose interpretation is unclear, could stand to kopa for " Schober ", 1650 Copan mons, or to a female name GEPA / Kepa, short form of Gebhild in meaning " sleeping virgin ".

Chance can be found for the mountain, the name Big Mittagskoge, in contrast to the two other mountains of the same name in the Karawanken, the Techantinger and the Mallestiger Mittagskoge.

Paths and huts

The direction of north facing steep rock face of the mountain are a characteristic appearance. The only refuge is located at 1527 m and is held by the OeAV Bertahütte. From there, the normal route marked on the northeast and east side and at the end on the south-east ridge leads to the summit.

Another opportunity for advancement provides a riser from the former Anna hut on the northwest, following the state border. On this ridge lies the Small Mittagskoge, slow. Koroska Mela Kepa or Jepca (! 546.5111115513.94305651815 m46.51111111111113.9430555555561815 ). A path across the northeast ridge leads Difficulty I-II to the summit.
