Kęstutis Šapka

Kestutis sapka (* November 15, 1949 in Vilnius ) is a retired Lithuanian high jumper, who competed for the Soviet Union.

In the Indoor Athletics Championships 1971 in Sofia he was 2.14 m sixth. In the summer at the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki crossed three jumpers the height of 2.20 m, while the Hungarian István Major European Indoor champion was eliminated in fourth place. Sapka achieved this height in the first attempt, the Hungarian Csaba Dosa in the second and Šapkas Ukrainian teammate Rustam Akhmetov in the third. Thus, the medals were distributed, and with sapka had for the first time a high jumper won with the Fosbury flop the European title.

At the European Indoor Championships in 1972 in Grenoble Major defended his title with 2.24m. In second and third place were placed, each with 2.22 m, the two Baltic sapka and Jüri Tarmak. In the summer Tarmak won at the Olympic Games in Munich with 2.23 m gold, while sapka disappointed in twelfth with 2.15 m.

In 1974 sapka at the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg with 2.22 m in front of the Hungarian Major and Vladimír Maly from Czechoslovakia, was fourth Dane Jesper Tørring. In the summer sapka won after 1972 for the second time at the Soviet Championship. In the EM 1974 in Rome Maly dropped out in third, fourth Major and Jacek Wszola in fifth with 2.19 m. Tørring and sapka however, get both 2.21 m and 2.23 m in the first attempt, and both jumped 2.25 m in her second attempt their personal best. Thus, both were higher jumped on the flop as Dick Fosbury at his Olympic victory in 1968. Having both Tørring and sapka failed to 2,27 m, won Tørring gold, undermined ever since sapka a failed attempt at 2.17 m and 2.19 m had.

Kestutis sapka is 1,91 m tall and weighed 86 kg in his playing days.
