Khanna rail disaster

In the railway accident in Khanna on 26 November 1998 initially derailed a part of a fast train. In the derailed cars an oncoming express train ran into second. More than 200 people died.

Starting position

The Golden Temple Express, train No 2903, was with 16 cars on his journey from Mumbai to Amritsar between the stations Khanna ( Punjab ) and Chawapail on the double-track to Ludhiana road. The track belongs to the network of the Northern Railway zone of the Indian Railways.

In the opposite direction of the express train No. 3152, the Jammu Tawi - Sealdah Express, from Jammu to Calcutta wrong. In both trains together were about 2,500 travelers.

The accident

Because of rail breakage derailed shortly before 3:15 clock the last 10 cars of the Frontier Golden Temple Mail, six of which are then projected into the gauge of the track the opposite direction. The front pulling part came only 3 km to a halt. The locomotive engineer of the train and the oncoming Jammu Tawi - Sealdah Express greeted each other at the train meeting yet. Shortly after the latter arrived at the accident site and its diesel locomotive drove full line speed in the derailed cars inside. Locomotive engineer and Beimann died.

Next worth knowing

The Frontier Golden Temple Mail suffered on 15 May 2003 another serious accident when near the town of Ludhiana three sleeping cars burnt out, where 38 people died. [Note 1]
