Consonants

The Khmer alphabet has 35 consonants, two of which are no longer used (here in red). For sequences of several consonants special forms of consonant letters are used, the cheung Aksar ( ជើង អ័ក្ស រ, "Letters feet"). This trailing forms are under the first consonant. All consonants except lâ ឡ have such forms.

The consonant letters are divided into an A- group and an O group is depending on to which vowel the letter pronounced. These two groups have an effect on the pronunciation of the vowel signs and making it possible to write the vowels and diphthongs many of the Khmer with the existing character set.

Spellings of consonants in words of foreign origin

Consonants that occur only in recently borrowed from Western languages, foreign words are represented by specific combinations of characters.

Vowels

The Khmer alphabet has 23 " dependent" vowel signs that can be associated with consonants ( srak Nissay ស្រៈនិស្ស័យ or srak phsâm ស្រៈផ្សំ ). The pronunciation of the vowel depends on whether they are connected with a consonant of the A group or with one of the O- group.

In addition, there are independent vowel signs ( srak penhtuŏ ស្រៈពេញតួ, " full vowels " ) that can be written without a preceding consonant.
